Course Description: Students in grade six are required to study world history from the age of Eary Humans through the fall of Rome. Highlights include the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt/Kush, India, China, Ancient Greece, Rome and, the study of the origins of Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. In addition, we will study and analyze current issues and topics from current news.

Texts Used: Ancient Civilizations Holt, Rinehart and Winston Publishers. Burstein, Stanley, Shek, Richard authors.

Ancient Times: Readings in Social Studies, Prentice Hall Publishers


Focus: The focus of the class will be to determine how early civilizations not only survived but in some cases thrived. Within this focus, we will examine how the rise of different cultures affected how people behaved and how their beliefs guided their actions through a variety of circumstances. We will seek to look for causes and consequences of major events and study the impact of individual historic figures.

Year-Long Course Goals

•To prepare students for the continuation of this line of chronological inquiry, in grade seven.
•To instill a greater understanding of the human experience tfrom the earliest ages of our history to the fall of Rome.
•To discuss and relate current events to past events and seek understanding of the actions of people throughout the world.
•To understand how to read and interpret documents, charts, maps, pictures, writings and journals.
•To gain a better understanding of our place in the world both historically and geographically.
•To understand how religion shapes the actions of its followers.
•To test students on factual and inferred knowledge based on readings, discussions and presentations, including comparing and contrasting and drawing valid conclusions.
•To understand land forms and how they helped to shape a regions’ history in a variety of ways including housing, diet, clothing and adaptation.

Parents with expertise in the areas of focus are encouraged to share their knowledge with the class.
